Breast Reduction (Mammaplasty)

Overly large and heavy breasts can cause a great deal of strain on a woman's back, shoulders, and neck. They many also impede her ability to exercise, limit her clothing choices, and make her feel self-conscious about her appearance. Breast reduction surgery can relieve this physical and social discomfort by reducing the size and weight of the breasts.

Each patient is unique. Because size and breast shape varies, as well as the desired amount of reduction, a consultation will allow your plastic surgeon to determine the best technique and incision placement to achieve your desired breast size, as well as anything else about your breasts that you would like to see improved. This will also help us to understand your expectations and determine whether they can be achieved.

Breast reduction often makes an immediate dramatic change in your appearance. Your breasts will be smaller and firmer. For some women it may take some time to adjust to this new body image. However, most women eventually become comfortable with their smaller breasts and feel very pleased with the results of surgery. In fact, the level of patient satisfaction resulting from breast reduction is among the highest of any plastic surgery procedure. Without the excessive weight of large breasts, you will find greater enjoyment in physical exercise as well as everyday activities that might have previously been hindered.

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • Breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame
  • Back, shoulder, or neck pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • Breasts are heavy, or pendulous, with areolas and nipples that point downward
  • Irritation, or skin rashes beneath your breasts
  • Tight bra straps have left indentions in shoulders
  • Physical activity is limited due to the weight and size of your breasts
  • Unhappiness or self-conciousness about large breast size

Because each breast reduction surgery and each patient is unique, Dr. Freed would be happy to meet with you personally to evaluate your needs and determine which surgical approach might work best for you. Take the first step towards comfort and a new outlook on life!
