Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Many women have experienced sagging and a loss of volume in their breasts as a result of aging or pregnancy. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their volume and shape, and begin to sag. Breast lift surgery, also called mastopexy, is intended to raise and re-shape the breasts, restoring them back up to a more youthful position.

Techniques vary, but the most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast. This method of lifting the breasts involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision is horizontal beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease.

After excess breast skin has removed, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola, which in a sagging breast may have been stretched, can be reduced in size at this time. The skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. The nipples and areolas remain attached to underlying mounds of tissue, and this usually allows for the preservation of sensation and the ability to breast-feed.

If more additional breast fullness is desirable, it may be recommended that a breast augmentation procedure also be done, with the insertion of breast implants (either silicone or saline) at the same time that they are lifted.

Healing is a gradual process. The incisions from breast lift surgery will fade over time. Dr. Freed will make every effort to make your scars as inconspicuous as possible, but certain individuals may have incision lines that are more noticeable. Still, it's important to remember that mastopexy scars are extensive and permanent. It is not uncommon for them to remain raised and red for several months up to one year although they will gradually become less obvious, sometimes eventually fading to thin white lines.

Following breast lift surgery, most patients find that they may be up after a day or two. It is often possible to return to work within a week or so, depending on your job. In many instances, you can resume most of your normal activities, including some form of mild exercise, after several weeks.

Breast lift surgery will make your breasts firmer and more uplifted. The position of your areolas and nipples will be enhanced, and the size of your areolas will be aesthetically pleasing. A breast lift can restore a patient's prior figure and, along with it, her sense of confidence in her body.
