Full, shapely breasts are attractive and very feminine. Women who are not gifted by nature
with full breasts can still achieve them through breast augmentation surgery.
There are various reasons that a woman might choose to undergo breast augmentation
surgery. These personal reasons may center around breasts that are perceived to be
under-developed, or because of noticeable size difference or asymmetry, or from changes after
pregnancy or breast feeding. Often after weight loss, aging or childbirth a woman's breast
volume and shape may change. In some cases a breast augmentation may be combined with a
breast lift to correct a drooping bust line while adding volume.
The most common reason women inquire about augmentation is to enhance their body contour
when, for personal reasons, they feel their breast size is too small. Having augmentation
surgery will make your breasts fuller and enhance their shape. You will find it can give you a
more proportional shape as well as make it easier to wear certain styles of clothing. Like many
women who have had breast augmentation using implants you may experience a boost in self-
confidence and improved self esteem.
During the initial consultation, you will be asked about your desired breast size and anything
else related to the appearance of your breasts that you feel is important. Depending on your
anatomy and personal preference, you will also need to determine the size of the implant, the
placement of the implant, where the incisions will be, and the type of implant; either saline or
silicone-filled.
The incisions can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the
areola or in the armpit. Working through the smallest incision possible, the surgeon will lift
your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, either beneath the pectoral muscle and on top
of the chest wall (sub-muscular placement), or directly behind the breast tissue. The implants
are generally placed behind the chest wall muscle for the most natural results. This pocket will hold the implant you have chosen. Every effort will
be made to assure that the incision is placed so resulting scars will be as inconspicuous as
possible.
The implant choice is a personal one. Breast implants are medical devices with a solid silicone,
rubber shell. The implant shell may be filled with either saline solution (sterile salt water) or
elastic silicone gel. Saline implants are FDA approved for augmentation in women 18 years of
age and older. Silicone implants are FDA approved for augmentation in women age 22 and
older. Both saline and silicone gel breast implants are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA). Approval means that an implant has been rigorously researched and
tested, and reviewed by an independent panel of physicians for safety.
For many women, the result of breast augmentation can be satisfying, even exhilarating, as
they learn to appreciate their fuller appearance.
Your decision to have breast augmentation is a highly personal one that not everyone will
understand. The important thing is how you feel about it. If you've met your goals, then your
surgery is a success.
